Description
This course will focus on the theme of the quest, perhaps the oldest narrative pattern in literature, with an emphasis on the quest as a means fo self-development and self-evaluation. We will examine the various manifestations of the quest from its origins through the modern era, exploring such topics as the call to adventure, crossing of thresholds, descent into the underworld, and the transformation of the hero. In the process, we will discuss how quest literature transforms the reader and how readers apply their own experience to the reading and understanding of text.
