Description

A survey of British literature from Dryden through Johnson. The course will sample representative eighteenth-century writers (such as Swift, Pope, Behn, Defoe, Addison, and Montagu) and literary genres (including plays, novels, pamplets, the periodical essay, and satire). It will also introduce students to the social, political, religious, and intellectual currents shaping literary production in the period.
